Food Department

Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The Food Services department is made up of a team of food professionals that are dedicated to students’ health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

About the Food Services Department

Our Cafeteria’s are located in 3 buildings with a population of about 1400 students. Our budget is approximately $700 thousand dollars. We are self-operated (not operated by a management company). All meals are freshly prepared on site in each of or on site school kitchens. We do not operate a centralized food production facility, nor do we satellite to other locations, our freshness guarantee.

We are self-funded as we generate our own income and pay our own operational expenses, with no reliance on local taxpayers or the school district general fund. Approximately 99% of our employees have taken a food service sanitation course, sponsored by the National Restaurant Association, and our school cafeterias are inspected twice a year by the the Porter County Health Department.  We proudly say a perfect score of 100% is the norm.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

Wellness Policy

Our District has developed a Wellness Policy that is focused on improving the health of students. The policy was developed by the health and wellness advisory council that includes teachers, parents, administrators, and the district nurse.

Sharing the Message of Wellness. One of our goals is to share the message of nutrition and wellness via our department’s Web site that emphasizes the importance of nutrition AND fitness. Our site provides information on the nutrition and fitness for teachers, parents, and students, as well as, a variety of learning tools.
